What Is Runway and Why Does It Matter?
Runway is one of the pioneering platforms in AI-powered video generation and editing. Founded in 2018, the company brought video-to-video transformations mainstream with Gen-1 and text-to-video with Gen-2. Today, with Gen-3 Alpha and Gen-4 models, it continues raising the bar in AI video generation. Our team at tasarim.ai comprehensively tested Runway over two weeks; in this review, we share our experiences, technical details, and who should actually use this tool.
Key Features
- Text to Video: Create videos from scratch with text prompts. Cinematic quality video up to 30 seconds with Gen-4.
- Image to Video: Convert a static image into animated video. Perfect for concept artists.
- Video to Video: Transform an existing video into a different style or environment.
- Motion Brush: Control motion direction and speed in specific areas of the video.
- Camera Controls: Virtual camera movements — professional shots like pan, tilt, zoom, and dolly.
- Extend: Extend generated videos, append scenes back-to-back.
- Lip Sync: Synchronize character lip movements to audio.
- Remove Background: Automatically remove video backgrounds.
- Inpainting: Change or remove specific objects within video.
Usage Experience
When we first entered Runway, we immediately noticed the interface was professional and well-thought-out. It gives a much more mature platform feel compared to other AI video tools. For our first text-to-video attempt, we used the prompt "A golden retriever running through a field of lavender at sunset, cinematic, slow motion." With Gen-4, we waited about 45 seconds and received a 10-second video. The result truly impressed us — the dog's fur details, the lavender field's color gradients, and the sunset lighting were incredibly natural.
Over the course of a week, we tried different scenarios. Character consistency in videos containing human faces was truly impressive with Gen-4. When we tried generating the same character from different angles and in different scenes, facial structure and clothing were largely preserved. However, we did notice occasional minor inconsistencies in full-profile to full-frontal transitions.
We tested the Image to Video feature on a product photograph. We uploaded a perfume bottle photo and wrote the prompt "slowly rotating with light reflections, luxury product commercial." The output was remarkably close to a real commercial production. Light reflections and rotation movement were natural. We clearly saw that this feature has tremendous potential in e-commerce and product promotion.
When we tried Motion Brush, we understood how important creative control is. In a landscape photo, it was possible to move only the clouds while keeping everything else still. This is an excellent tool for creating timelapse effects or cinematic atmosphere.
On the negative side, problems persist with text in videos. Writing on signs or book covers can still come out distorted. Additionally, physical realism decreases in very complex scenes — crowded streets, multiple character interactions. Hands and fingers can still be problematic, though this issue has significantly diminished with Gen-4.

Comparison with Competitors
Pika is more affordable and easier to use, but quality isn't at Runway's level. Kling AI is particularly strong in the Asian market with a price advantage, but its platform maturity trails Runway's. Luma Dream Machine is impressive in physical realism but limited in feature variety. Runway remains the strongest choice as an overall package.
Verdict and Rating
Runway continues to be the gold standard in AI video generation. With Gen-4, it has taken major strides in character consistency, physical realism, and video quality. Its platform maturity, API support, and professional toolset make it stand out in the industry. While pricing is high, it's worth the investment for professional results.
After our two-week comprehensive test, we give Runway an 8.5 out of 10. If you're serious about AI video generation, Runway should still be your first choice.
> tasarim.ai Score: 8.5/10 — The leader in video generation. Expensive but unquestionable quality.
