Correction: Ultra, Kontext, and FLUX.2 are different models
An earlier version of this article used the names “FLUX.2 Ultra” and “FLUX.2 Kontext.” Those names are not supported by the official Black Forest Labs documentation reviewed here. The original publication date is retained while the model distinction is clarified; this correction does not claim a new launch date.
FLUX1.1 [pro] Ultra
The official Ultra documentation identifies the model as FLUX1.1 [pro] Ultra. It supports text-to-image generation, Raw mode, and image references. Its documented output limit is 4 megapixels, which does not guarantee “4K” at every aspect ratio. The API endpoint is /flux-pro-1.1-ultra.
FLUX.1 Kontext
The Kontext documentation describes the FLUX.1 Kontext family. Pro and Max offer generation and editing workflows. Downloadable Dev weights have a separate license; the whole family should not be described as unconditionally open source or free for commercial model use.
FLUX.2 is separate
FLUX.2 is a distinct model family supporting generation and reference-image editing. Do not transfer features or access conditions from one family to another variant.
Access and local hardware
Using an API differs from running downloadable weights locally. This article’s previous claims about downloadable Ultra weights and a 12/24 GB local setup were unverified and have been removed. For local use, check the selected downloadable variant’s model card, license, precision/quantization settings, and memory requirements. A cloud API does not imply a local GPU requirement.
Previous generic price, speed-improvement, and generation-time figures were also removed because they were not tied to a verified model and measurement setup. Base your choice on the selected variant’s official documentation and current provider terms.
