Midjourney v7 Overview

Midjourney has been at the top of AI image generation as a pioneer for years. Each new version brought significant leaps in quality and usability. Having started the photorealism revolution with v5, improved text understanding and detail quality with v6, Midjourney now takes all these features to the next level with v7.

Photorealism: Truly Indistinguishable?

Midjourney v7's most striking feature is its photorealism quality. Human portraits show tremendous progress, especially in skin texture, eye detail, and realistic rendering of hair strands. Skin that sometimes appeared plastic in v6 has noticeably become more natural in v7.

A similar quality increase exists in landscape and architectural photography. Light reflections, shadow transitions, and atmospheric effects are at professional photography quality. Particularly in golden hour scenes and reflections on water surfaces, v7 produces truly impressive results.

However, some limitations still exist. In very crowded scenes (stadiums, concerts), faces of people in the background can become distorted. Hands are still occasionally problematic, but there is significant improvement compared to v6.

Creative Control

The personalize feature that comes with v7 is very noteworthy. You can create a personal style profile by showing the system images you like. In your subsequent generations, this profile is automatically applied, achieving a consistent aesthetic.

The Style Reference feature has been enhanced. You can now upload multiple reference images and adjust their weights. For example, you can create blends like 70 percent of one photograph's color palette and 30 percent of a painting's composition.

With Character Reference, you can consistently use the same character in different scenes. You can create a character reference and generate images of the same person in different environments and poses. This feature is fantastic for storytelling and character design.

Web Interface

Midjourney is no longer just Discord. The web interface is mature and extremely useful. You can perform all operations like image generation, editing, variation creation, and collection management from the browser. The interface is clean, fast, and intuitive.

The editor deserves special mention: you can select specific areas of a generated image and regenerate, expand, or erase and refill them. These inpainting and outpainting capabilities rival Photoshop's Generative Fill feature.

Pricing

There is no change in pricing. Basic plan is $10/month (200 GPU minutes), Standard plan $30 (15 GPU hours), Pro plan $60 (30 GPU hours), and Mega plan $120 (60 GPU hours). v7 uses the same credits as v6; no additional charge.

Comparison with v6

In direct comparisons, v7 is noticeably superior to v6 in the following areas: photorealism (especially human portraits), text generation (text in images is now more readable), hand and finger quality, and understanding long prompts. Areas where v6 is better are virtually nonexistent; perhaps only in some abstract artistic styles might v6's different character be preferred.

Conclusion and Rating

Midjourney v7 is still the gold standard in AI image generation. It leads competitors in photorealism, creative control, and ease of use. We give it a 9 out of 10. On the downside, pricing is higher compared to competitors and community features outside Discord remain limited.
