Usage Experience
We started testing Canva AI with Magic Design. We entered the prompt "Design a modern, minimalist banner for a tech blog" and received 8 different template suggestions in about 5 seconds. Most templates were genuinely usable quality, becoming publish-ready with just a few minor edits. At this point, we saw how powerful the combination of Canva's massive template library with AI truly is.
We tested Magic Eraser on a product photo. We wanted to remove a cluttered table in the background, and the result was quite successful. Edge transitions looked natural and the fill of the erased area was convincing. However, in complex scenes — for example, when we tried to remove a person standing next to another person — the result was less satisfying, with blurry patches and unnatural transitions.
When we comprehensively tested the Text to Image feature, we found that results weren't at the level of Midjourney or Leonardo AI. Canva's image generation is more suited to simple illustrations and icons that complement templates. If you're expecting photorealistic outputs, you may be disappointed.
The Magic Write tool pleasantly surprised us. We created a blog post draft and the output had a clean, logical structure. Of course, it wasn't publication-ready quality, but it provided a solid starting point. It was particularly functional for SEO meta descriptions and social media copy.
After a week of use, the feature that impressed us most was Magic Expand. We converted a vertically shot product photo to horizontal banner format, and the AI extended the edges of the image so naturally that it was hard to tell where the original photo ended and the AI generation began.
